OPENAssociations

Helping associations (non-profits, professional societies) use open source and social media software to run and improve their organizations.

About this Site

Our company, The Center for Association Growth (www.tcag.com) has been using open source software, specifically Plone (www.plone.org) to help build some pretty cool, and useful web sites for our association clients.  The goal of this site is to bring more people into a much larger discussion... how can open source technologies be leveraged by associations and non-profits to improve their organizations?

For months now, we have been looking into and at Association Management Software (AMS). We… Continue

Biggest fear for 2009 - How will associations compete with social media sites

I recently read a post by Maddie Grant that outlines what she sees as the five biggest fears that associations have about social media. Here they are:

- Loss of control over your marketing messages;

- how do deal with negative comments about you;

- how to empower staff to speak appropriately for the association;

- how to manage the time suck;

- what if we build it and they don't come?…

Over the last several years, we (TCAG) has built out a very powerful web site solution for associations. It is powered by Plone, a very solid, robut open source content management system. Our association clients have a whole stack of core functionality running on this open source solution.

Modules include; web pages, events, news, feeds, advertising portlets, members only area, membership directories, resource libraries, collaboration areas, job bank, vendor directories and a whole… Continue

How are you using Twitter within your association?

I have been trying to figure out if and/or how to best integrate Twitter into a professional societies social media plan.

I have set up an account for myself and an account to facilitate my role for the Legal Marketing Association

I found a lot of value in following the tweets of others but am struggling with how the personal and the professional sides of one's life seem to get… Continue
